Associate Vector Scientist
Description:
Alameda County Mosquito Abatement District is seeking an exceptional entry or mid-career candidate to support the lab in monitoring mosquito abundance, arbovirus prevalence in mosquitoes, and insecticide resistance. Candidates must have a strong background in biology, molecular biology and/or ecology as it relates to insects and/or viruses; familiarity with habitats that breed mosquitoes; experience with quantitative PCR and methods for analyzing and visualizing data using computer software. Preferred expertise includes some or all of the following: identification of larval and adult mosquitoes to species; PCR primer design; analysis of Next Generation nucleotide sequence data; assays for detecting enzyme activity; piloting unmanned air systems (i.e. drone aircraft); independent or mentored research related to monitoring and controlling mosquito abundance; community engagement.
Applicants must possess: a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in biology or related field; a valid California Driver’s License; the ability to maintain and be insurable under the guidelines set forth by the District’s insurance carrier, and to safely operate and navigate District vehicles to perform work-related activities. The successful candidate will be required to complete a six (6) month probationary period.
Compensation: annual salary of the Vector Scientist series is $71,105 - $106,739; benefit package (CalPers retirement, medical, dental, vision, vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays).
